Storage and Connection Technologies for High-Performance Digital Movie Cameras
The capture of high-quality digital motion pictures produces extremely high data rates. The immediate interim storage of this data in realtime represents a particular technical challenge, not only because of performance requirements but also because of handling and cost constraints imposed by the production workflow. A survey was carried out to assess the viability of available storage solutions and to analyze ongoing developments in terms of performance evolution, the results of which are presented in this paper. Current and developing storage technologies are presented and their key characteristics discussed. The performance level of the different approaches is compared and, based on the research carried out, predictions are made regarding the direction and rate of future developments. The different options are analyzed as to their potential for fulfilling the demands of the storage of high-quality motion picture data, and a possible path to a technical solution is given.
