The Role of Transform Matrices in Digital Cinema

John Silva

This paper focuses on the role of transform matrices in digital cinema. It is one in a series of five documents that were voluntarily written by the author for the benefit of some members of the SMPTE Digital Cinema committee who did not have an extensive knowledge in color science. The intent of this paper is to take some of the mystery out of CIE transform matrices and their coefficients. What are they, and why are they used? The paper will detail some important physical characteristics of color and follow with a description of human perception. The subject material will then be explored from this perspective.
