Networks: A Viable Alternative to Crosspoint Routers?

Neil Maycock

For some considerable time, the broad-cast industry has been exploring and implementing network technologies, predominantly for file transfers. However, in the field of live signal distribution, where network technologies certainly appear to offer considerable potential, there are still significant ongoing issues that require explanation and discussion. Traditionally, broadcast and professional media signals have been distributed around a facility by a matrix crosspoint switch. Historically, these switches have been the most economical solution for demanding television applications; however, the cost reduction in network bandwidths could result in the network becoming a viable alternative. This paper reviews the traditional solution, its strengths and weaknesses, and continues by considering what would be required from a network technology to perform this function for video The suitability of some specific network protocols and technologies are also compared The paper goes on to look at some current-day examples where applications with a hybrid of the two approaches are being used although crosspoint routers are significantly cheaper than a network equivalent.
