Message from the Engineering Vice-President
One of the most prominent activities in which our Society engages is the generation of Standards. It has been argued that developing standards is the largest contribution SMPTE makes, and also what makes it the most relevant professional organization in the media and entertainment industry. As I write this, I am returning from the Standards Committee meetings held in Burlington (Canada) in June. I am continually in awe of the efforts required to move the standards we are developing through the various processes required to formally complete a Standard, Recommended Practice, or Engineering Guideline. Currently, there are over 350 active standards and over 200 Recommended Practices on the books. As a global Society, SMPTE also maintains active (formal) liaisons with other standards organizations including ISO, MPEG, and ITU, as well as many trade organizations.
