Color Processing for Digital Cinema 3: Minimum Linear Bit Depth, Encoding of near Blacks, Gamut Mapping, and Colorimetry for the Tolerances in the Standards
This series of articles on the color processing for digital cinema is based on the Engineering Guideline, SMPTE 432–1. The DC28 committee believed the information in that guideline would be more widely available if it were published as a series of articles in the Journal. This third article in the series discusses a variety of topics important to the design and understanding of encoding images in the Digital Cinema system. In particular, the topics being discussed in this article are the minimum linear bit depth needed inside the projector, the encoding of very dark colors, gamut mapping, and the basic colorimetry equations needed to understand the specification of the tolerances in the standards.
