D-Cinema Content Protection Architecture: A Primer

Pierre-Anthony Lemieux

D-Cinema content is extremely valuable and, as a result, protecting it requires a combination of cryptographic security, physical security, and forensic auditing tools. Such a level of security need not, however, come at the expense of interoperability, reliability, and usability. To enable interoperability, the SMPTE DC28 committee has been leading an effort to standardize a D-Cinema content protection architecture using input from a broad spectrum of industry participants. While some aspects of the architecture, such as device registries, remain under consideration, its core components are now worldwide standards, being actively implemented by manufacturers, content providers, service providers, and exhibitors alike.
