11.88 Gbits/sec: Continuing the Evolution of Serial Digital Interface

Nigel Seth-Smith, Gareth M. Heywood, Ryan Latchman

With ever-increasing bandwidth requirements for new TV formats, there is a need for a serial transport standard beyond the 3 Gbits/sec offered by SMPTE 424M. This paper proposes an increase to 11.88 Gbits/sec, using traditional serial digital interface (SDI) techniques to transport four times the data. Detailed descriptions of the multiplex are included. The challenges involved, and the requirements at the physical layer to transport such high data rates are also discussed.
