On December 2, 1992 John Malone, CEO of the largest cable operator in the U.S. at the time, famously predicted1 that digital compression would expand his modest 50-channel analog system to a 500 channel universe. He was correct of course. However, looking back, maybe he should have said 500K “channels” or more. That is what we have today, in effect, with the “any content, anywhere, anytime, any device”2 consumption mantra. This is fueled by increased access to content via networks of all sorts.
