Audio/Video Synchronization in Compressed Systems: A Status Report

J. Patrick Waddell

Audio/video synchronization (lip-sync) is an ongoing problem in digital multimedia broadcasting. This paper reviews some of the sources of this problem (end to end in the system), and looks at current work being undertaken by different organizations (SMPTE, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), etc.) worldwide to resolve the problem. A new CEA, “CEB-20,” which provides detailed decoder implementation guidance is reviewed in detail. The work of the current SMPTE Study Group is also reviewed.
