Developing End-to-End Standards for 3D TV to the Home

Enthusiastic consumer response to recent three-dimensional (3D) the-atrical releases is demonstrating users' appetite for 3D content, and 3D seems destined to become the next killer application for the home-entertainment industry. Until then, the standardization of 3D formats for mastering and distribution is critically important for a successful introduction to the consumer market. This article first provides an overview of 3D end-to-end systems components, workflow, issues, and challenges. The article focuses on the importance of standards development and where standards are needed for 3D to the home. Finally, an overview of worldwide 3D standards development efforts is provided.
