Advancements in Film Scanning Technologies
This paper provides a discussion on various film scanning technology advancements that provide operational innovations and improvements to film scanners. It describes Time Delay Integration (TDI) sensor technology and outlines the significant speed and stability improvements of this system compared to other sensors (e.g., classic charge-coupled device [CCD] line sensors). The article also highlights how the use of efficient light-emitting diode (LED) light sources will greatly affect the scanning process. Furthermore, a new design in film roller gates as well as optical perforation detection systems provides touch-free optical pin registration for gentle film handing. In addition, integrated digital image processing is now capable of shifting the images into the subpixel domain. In summary, the paper provides an in-depth discussion of the new technology that is available for post-production facilities to address a multitude of scanning applications that require high-speed and gentle film scanning solutions.
