SMPTE Future Forecast: Cloudy with a Chance of 3D: The Digital Age Has Arrived, and it is Clear That Standards are Vital in This Time of Rapid Change
That message seemed to underscore the 2010 SMPTE Technical Conference and Expo, 25–28 October at Hollywood & Highland. By all accounts the event was a huge success, as attendees explored some of today's most challenging areas, such as stereoscopic 3D; emerging topics such as cloud-based services; and bleeding edge technologies including ultra-high-definition television and holography. — In total, the event encompassed 81 presentations in 14 sessions. Additional session themes included file-based workflow, cinematography and post, TV station infrastructure, and the status of mobile/handheld devices. — At press time, attendance figures were expected to reach roughly 1,200 registrants. “That kind of attendance shows the importance of SMPTE's work, not only as a standards provider but as the center of the standards community,” said SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange. “With all this dynamic growth and change in the industry, it's really important that the standards community comes together and facilitates innovation that enables technology to work and business to thrive.”
