Overview of the EBU Loudness Recommendation R 128

Florian Camerer

The European Broadcasting Union group PLOUD has reached the final stage of its work, which resulted in recommendations and documents that will have a profound effect on any audio production in broadcasting. The gradual switch from peak to loudness normalization combined with a new maximum true-peak level and the usage of the descriptor “loudness range” allow the group for the first time to fully characterize the audio part of a program. More importantly, it has the potential to solve the most frequent complaint of listeners: that of severe level jumps within a program and between programs. At the core of PLOUD's output stands the loudness recommendation R 128. The origins of the issue, as well as the details of the recommendation, are presented.
