A Year of Historic Milestones [Message from the President]

Peter Lude

The start of a new year presents a rare moment to reflect on the accomplishments of the past 12 months and consider what is in store for the future. Over the holiday break, I had the chance to do just that. 2011, my first year as SMPTE President, seemed to fly by particularly rapidly. Perhaps this is just a symptom of my getting older—but instead, I prefer to believe that it has to do with the remarkable amount of activity and change occurring within our industry, keeping everyone busy. Viewed from a broader basis, the year was marked by an astounding number of notable worldwide events, including the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, destructive flooding in Thailand, the Arab Spring and political controversies creating headlines worldwide and financial turbulence in the Eurozone, United states, and throughout the globe. These important events touched the lives of many, both directly and indirectly, and our thoughts go out to our SMPTE colleagues whose lives were disrupted.
