Meeting SMPTE in All the Right Places [Message from the Executive Director]
Recently, I traveled through the San Francisco International Airport. While making my way to the baggage claim, passing through the terminal, I was pleasantly surprised to see an exhibition on display, highlighting the dawn of television. Television: TV in the Antenna Age profiled the advent of television in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Among the many items on display were placards of test patterns, including the color bars, complete with a reference to SMPTE! There were photos of important television moments and historical events and artifacts of the early television era. It was a pleasant opportunity to browse such a great collection. It turns out that the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has an extensive museum program with rotating exhibits. As described on the SFO Museum website, this establishment was the first of its kind in an international airport. What a wonderful way to expose the general public to the history of television; something with which nearly every human being has some connection.
