Introduction to the Audio Issue

The last few years have been an exciting time for Cinema sound. Ten years ago it may have seemed that “everything needed has been invented” (apologies to Charles H. Duell*). Digital sound, then delivered on 35mm prints mastered in the Dolby, DTS, or Sony system, was transitioning to delivery from Digital Cinema servers. How could it possibly get any better than that? Well, the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal 2012 Audio Issue comes to the rescue!
