IP Multicast and Advanced Video Applications at the London 2012 Summer Olympics

Harry Ryan, Rajesh Rajah

This paper describes two significant technologies involving TCP/IP, both of which were deployed at the London Summer Olympic Games. The first is an IP multicast deployment used to distribute live video coverage of events at the London Games from event venues to the International Broadcast Centre and other locations. The second is the deployment of advanced video applications and services to multiscreen devices, a new capability that was tested and used at the games by NBC-Olympics. All network-related equipment detailed in the paper will be described in general terms throughout the paper as to where and how each component was used.
