Section Meetings

The San Francisco Section ended another great year with a Holiday Social on 18 December 2012. The event was an outstanding success, with more than 100 people attending. The meeting was open to members and guests, nonmembers, and the local chapters of the American Audio Society (AES) and the Society for Information Display (SID), and was generously hosted by Dolby at its Video R&D labs in Sunnyvale, CA. Pat Griffis, outgoing SMPTE Secretary/Treasurer, introduced Mike Rockwell, executive vice president of advanced technology and Carlo Basile, vice president of video research and engineering, from Dolby, who welcomed attendees. Dolby also opened their Innovation Theater in the facility, showcasing the Atmos sound system; this gives viewers a more immersive aural experience, with overhead sound channels, allowing a more pin-point surround field. The glasses-free 3D display developed by Dolby engineers was also on display at that location.
