Accurate ACES Rendering in Systems Using Small 3D LUTs

Yasuharu Iwaki, Mitsuhiro Uchida

The Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) color space has unlimited dynamic range; however, it is not easy to implement ACES workflow and maintain high quality on many grading systems currently in use. This paper describes custom Log ACES and High Saturated Log ACES (HSLA) methods designed to solve this problem. The custom Log ACES method can process negative ACES values and can handle high dynamic range. HSLA expands the ACES color space to reduce unused area and spread real color data area in order to employ three-dimensional lookup tables (3D LUTs) more effectively. These two methods drastically improve accuracy of color reproduction even if the post-production system supports only 3D LUTS with fewer than 33-point lattices.
