Introduction: File-Based Workflow

John Luff

It seems like every other sentence I read in our industry mentions “work flow.” Indeed, as we have transitioned to productions based on files and streams of digital content, the processes we employ, which collectively represent “work flow,” have become increasingly dependent on effective use of technology, which did not exist two decades ago. In the Fall of 1988, SMPTE and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) issued a report from a joint task force that still defines the basics of the workflow we rely on today. That report, “Final Report: Analyses and Results, EBU/SMPTE Task Force for Harmonized Standards for the Exchange of Programme Material as Bitstreams,” led to critical standards such as the MXF suite of standards developed by SMPTE.
