Section Meetings

Twenty members and guests gathered at ENCO Systems headquarters and manufacturing facility in Southfield, MI, on 25 February for a presentation by Ken Frommert and Dave Turner, ENCO. Frommert and Turner discussed the company's DAD and DADVideo audio playout and file management products. The enCaption3 is the third generation of ENCO's near-realtime live captioning system. Recent FCC rules pertaining to captioning for material presented over the air and via IP present a challenge for content creators and broadcasters. The enCaption3 system uses a resident dictionary and is able to “learn” new words and phrases, with consideration to context and local idioms and usage, to provide a high level of speech recognition accuracy. It is also able to learn via integration with show formatting and scripting software such as iNews. The speed and accuracy of the system was demonstrated by accessing the audio of a live stream of an out-of-state station's local newscast. The automatically generated captions were shown on a separate screen. To those present, the results compared quite favorably with live captioning performed by a human stenographer.
