Standards for Entertainment in the Internet Age [Report from the Standards Vice President]

Alan Lambshead

As I write this, I am on my way home from the second joint SMPTE/Stanford Conference Entertainment Technology in the Internet Age. During the event, many speakers discussed the successes and challenges of delivering high-quality motion picture entertainment over the Internet. The standards for production and delivery over traditional broadcast delivery mechanism are mature and well understood. Such is not the case with delivery over the Internet. We heard about the great advances in streaming delivery over the past year and learned that live events such as the recent Sochi Olympics or the World Cup are proving to be the most challenging.
