12-Loudspeaker System for Three-Dimensional Sound Integrated with a Flat-Panel Display
Super Hi-Vision, or ultrahigh-definition television (UHDTV2), has a 7680 × 4320 pixel video image and 22.2 multichannel sound. The 22.2 multichannel sound is ideally reproduced by three-dimensionally arranged loudspeakers. However, loudspeakers cannot be arranged in the ideal positions in some viewing environments. Therefore, a 12-loudspeaker system integrated with a flat-panel display has been developed. The system can reproduce three-dimensional sound without loudspeakers behind or at the side of the viewer. The front 11 channels, which surround the display or are positioned on the display, are played back by the stereophonic method. The other channels, which are set far from the display, are played back by binaural processing with the head-related transfer function (HRTF). Reproduction by convolution with the HRTFs, the sound propagation characteristics from the loudspeakers to each ear, makes it possible to reproduce the sound of channels played by loudspeakers behind or at the side of the viewer using only front loudspeakers.
