Standards for Cinema and Video [Report from the Standards Vice President]
Almost 100 years ago, SMPTE was founded to bring order out of chaos for the motion picture industry. More than 60 years ago, SMPTE added television to its mandate, and began writing standards for the nascent video industry. Fast-forward 50 years to the end of the 20th century, and once again SMPTE played a leading role in creating standards for the deployment of digital cinema. Today, we see the widespread use of digital technology in both digital cinema, traditional television (video) and indeed in all forms of motion imaging. This convergence allows content producers to leverage common technology for content creation, post-production and to some extent distribution. However, for all the commonalities there are still many unique needs of each industry segment. I would like to highlight two relatively new SMPTE standards that are used in both the cinema and video industries.
