Beyond HD: Status of Image Acquisition Solutions for Next-Generation Broadcasting Formats

Klaus Weber

Many discussions inside the broadcasting community are focused on next-generation broadcast formats. For content producers and distributors, the primary question remains: What will be the best solution for the next-generation broadcast format? Is it just the double pixel count in horizontal and vertical directions? Will a higher frame rate, a higher dynamic range and extended color range, or both provide viewers with a higher value? Or which combination of these improvements needs to be included in a next-generation broadcast format? The answer will likely depend on the type of production, type of content delivery, or both. All of these points have a direct influence on imager technology, and this paper explains the different potential solutions of “4K” or ultrahigh-definition image acquisition, including their strengths and limitations, with a focus on live broadcast productions.
