Display Technology: The Next Chapter

Peter H. Putman

Ultra-high-definition (UHD) and 4K have arrived and will become “everyday” formats for both consumer and professional applications in short order, thanks to mass production and the ever-lower prices. However, the transition to UHD, along with adoption of high dynamic range, high frame rate, and the wider BT.2020 color space, has created some major challenges for display manufacturers. This paper will provide readers with useful definitions and explanations of the key technologies that are finding their way into next-generation direct-view displays, including indium- gallium- zinc oxide thin-film transistors; quantum dots; organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs); DisplayPort 1.3 and superMHL link interfaces; and high-efficiency LED emitters for projection.
