SMPTE Progress Report—Displays 2017

The year 2017 is turning out to be significant and a transitory one for display technology. 4K, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), high dynamic range (HDR), and collapsing panel prices are all playing a part as the business of manufacturing and selling displays becomes more commoditized. Excess manufacturing capacity and slowing demand for televisions, combined with a shift to ultrahigh-definition (UHD) ( $3840\times2160$ ) resolution, has resulted in retail prices below $500 for 55 in. UHD televisions (UHDTVs).
