Progress Report: IMF for Broadcast and Online

Bruce Devlin, Andy Wilson

IMF is the Interoperable Mastering Format, also known as SMPTE ST 2067. It is becoming increasingly seen as the format for interchanging masters between media companies that require multiple versions of their titles. Originally standardized in 2013, the benefits of the standard come from its componentized media storage, i.e., one file per media track, and its efficient versioning model that keeps the description of the version and the physical storage of the media separate. As IMF becomes more widely deployed, new requirements for the format are being generated to suit different businesses and countries. One such group is the Digital Production Partnership (DPP).
