How Do Standards Organizations like SMPTE Survive in an Agile Software World?

Bruce Devlin

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) is over 100 years old, and many technological changes over the decades have forced the Society to re-evaluate how we engage with current and future members. New film technologies, the introduction of sound, electronic valves, then transistors, chips, and now software have given rise to different ways that standards are used in the industry. Today, we see perhaps the biggest structural change in the technology of film and television so far.
