The Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) has been conducting research on the development of advanced terrestrial broadcasting technology to transmit ultrahigh-definition television (UHDTV) signals. To analyze the transmission characteristics of the proposed system, we designed a prototype modulator and demodulator, and measured their performance through laboratory experiments. Further, we also evaluated the proposed system via large-scale field trials under conditions similar to actual broadcast propagation environments. This paper presents the concept and specifications of the proposed system. The verification results of a computer simulation, and laboratory and large-scale field experiments are also described.
