Foundations for New Media Nodes

Richard Hastie, Gareth Sylvester-Bradley, Thomas True

According to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), broadcasting “should strive to reuse, as much as possible, existing IT and Internet Standards to leverage the research and development investments of this much wider industry. [Broadcast workflows] should be implementable in software running on standard IT servers, so enabling flexible, agile and scalable infrastructures.” We outline three foundational layers of Accelerated Server Hardware, Virtualization, and Software Composability that together facilitate this goal. We explain how the technologies in these layers can be applied to build unlimited Media Nodes that can run anywhere and be managed with standard IT and data center tools.
