Network Video Interface: A High-Fidelity and Low-Latency Transmission Solution for Professional Live Video Production

Zhenzhong Wang, Wei Wang, Jinsu Chen, Jun Du, Tian Luo, Juan Wang

The Network Video Interface (NVI) technology addresses critical challenges in the field of professional live video production and broadcasting, where the requirements for low latency, high reliability, and efficient bandwidth utilization are paramount. Existing IP-based transmission standards such as Secure Reliable Transport (SRT), Network Device Interface (NDI), and SMPTE ST 2110 provide foundational capabilities but face limitations in handling diverse network environments. To overcome these challenges, we introduce NVI, an advanced transmission protocol that extends SRT by incorporating innovative features for low-latency and high-bitrate video transmission across both the internet and Local Area Networks (LAN). Through comprehensive evaluations in simulated network conditions, our results demonstrate that NVI achieves significant latency reductions, meeting the stringent demands of live production and broadcasting. These findings establish NVI as a vital advancement in media transport technologies, offering a scalable, adaptable, and high-performance solution for future broadcasting infrastructures.
