The Media eXchange Layer (MXL) of the EBU Dynamic Media Facility

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), an alliance of 113 public service media organizations across 56 countries, launched the Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) initiative in 2023 to help members address the challenges of the evolving media landscape.1 The DMF seeks customizable and dynamic workflows that offer cost-effective scalability, enhanced operational efficiency, security, and reliability. It is based on a framework for software-defined media production, operating on commercially available off-the-shelf (COTS) computing hardware, utilizing a layered architectural model (Fig. 1) that integrates production components within an interconnected ecosystem.2
