2025 State of Archiving

James Snyder

2025 saw both continuing progress in media preservation and continuing challenges. Media preservation currently consists of two key, substantively different areas. The first step is to adapt current production tools and practices to facilitate the long-term preservation of new materials once the final production is completed. The second involves efforts to identify existing content libraries to create the best conditions for their survival and reuse. This includes planning for non-digital content masters (especially existing physical media) to be converted to digital assets, allowing for future reuse and remonetization.
