A joint meeting of the Society of Satellite Professionals International-Southeast Chapter (SSPI-SE) and SMPTE at the Eagle Rock Studios in Atlanta on 12 June, encouraged many attendees and guests to join an informative night exploring the growth of movies and episodic television shot in Georgia. A total of 71 attendees received a tour of Eagle Rock’s roughly half-a-million square feet of space and a presentation by VER’s Todd Patience on how advances in technology are changing production workflows. Specifically, the LED wall is shortening the length of time movies spend in post-production, as well as reducing their overall cost. B-Roll is shot and prepared in advance. LED walls can be assembled in virtually any size and aspect ratio and are used as backdrops. Patience showed examples, which included cityscapes and cut-away cars, fit with several LED walls which provide out-the-window motion views as well as extremely realistic sources of reflections. Cityscapes enable shooting on a sound stage instead of having shooting on a location at higher cost. He also provided examples of productions shown, including movies Gravity, Passengers, and the ABC drama Scandal. Patience stated that VER is the largest rental house and has 28 warehouse locations worldwide. Surprisingly, the facility included an in-house engineering department that designs and builds equipment and component parts that are not commercially available.
